Navy Lieutenant, (Corrigan), newswoman Diana, Professor
Norton, (Shaw), and his son Billy board a rocket powered submarine to search for the lost
city of Atlantis. There they meet the ruler of the White Robes, Sharad, (Farnum), who is
trying to vanquish the evil Black Robes led by Unga Kahn, (Blue), a mad master of
earthquakes who vows to rule the world or destroy it with his army of robots called the
Volkites, an armoured juggernaut, radio controlled Volplanes and a disintegrating ray.
Republic's second serial is a rapidly paced adventure tale following the success of the
studio's In Darkest Africa and inspired by the popularity of the
"Flash Gordon" comic strip and Universal's release of Flash
Gordon the same year.
Republic had just purchased the Mascot Film Company who were responsible for the similar
serial Phantom Empire.

At a party, several men enter in a game of dice to win the
right to court a particularly attractive woman, (Berber). During the game one man,
(Schunzel), strangles his opponent, but the man's apparition returns to haunt him finally
causing a fatal heart attack.
When a drunkard discovers his wife, (Berber), is having an affair with another man,
(Veidt), he kills her and walls up her corpse with a black cat in the cellar.
At the secret location for a clandestine social club, an intruder, (Schunzel), picks the
ace of spades from a deck of cards, which indicates that he must die that night. At
midnight, the intruder feigns a heart attack and captures his enemy, (Veidt), who he
places in the chair of death to meet the fate that was intended for him.
A young woman, (Berber), left alone by her husband invites a man attacked on the castle
grounds as a guest. Naturally his attentions turn to the neglected wife, but her husband
the Baron, (Veidt), returns and scares the man into submission, revealing that his wife's
guest has no courage. The Baron and his wife are then re-united.
The pictures of the characters in each story come to life as the antique bookseller goes
insane.
Oswald later adapted the Poe stories as a comedy in Funf Geschichten

The head of Vitascope, Josef Greenbaum left when the company joined with Union to set up
Greenbaum films and produce a rival version of the famous Sherlock Holmes story to compete
with Vitaskop's 1914 production using most of the same cast and crew. Here Irrah plays Sir
Henry's fiancee as Weisse had stayed at Vitascope.
Unfortunately all his productions were banned in Germany for the duration of World War One
allowing Vitaskop, now renamed "PAGU", to released their own episode three in
1915, Das Dunkle Schloss: der Hund von Baskerville III.

A ventriloquist named Professor Echo, (Chaney), forms an association with Tweedledee the
midget, (Earles), and Hercules the strongman, (McLaglen), to con rich clients out of their
money. Using a pet shop as their base, Echo disguises himself as the kindly Mrs. O'Grady
and uses his ventriloquist skills to sell "talking" parrots to her affluent
customers, only to rob them in their homes with the midget disguised as a baby. However,
the trio's well laid plans go awry when Tweedledee and Hercules decide to attempt their
own heist and foolishly murder Mr. Arlington and his daughter. The police believe that the
pet shop clerk Hector, (Moore), is the culprit while the gang take up residence at a
mountain cabin. There Echo's moll Rosie, (Busch), who has fallen in love with Hector,
pleads with Echo to save him from execution and promises never to see Hector again. In the
courtroom Echo confesses to the crime to save Hector, but he is eventually aquitted. Rosie
pays him a visit at the carnival where he is working and Echo kindly releases her from her
promise allowing Hector and Rosie to be together.
A curious film from Browning who introduces a giant gorilla by way of a climax. |

This strange melodrama was one of MGM's highest grossing
films of 1925 and paved the way for Browning's other excursions into eccentricities
including the infamous Freaks which was also inspired by a
Clarence Robbins source.

At their new home in Cornwall brother and sister Roderick, (Milland), and Pamela
Fitzgerald, (Hussey), experience the wrath of an evil spirit that seems to herald it's
presence with the scent of Mimosa. The spirit tries to control Pamela's soul, but the
intervention of a young girl named Stella Meredith, (Russell), with psychic abilities,
reveals that the spirit might be her dead mother. Stella is shocked to discover that the
spirit is evil, but she leads the Fitzgerald's to the truth and ultimately a successful
exorcism.
An atmospheric and chilling ghost story set in Hollywood's version of Cornwall filled with
ghostly cliches including the shattering and opening of windows, drapes that billow and
french doors that fly open.
For this, his directorial debut, Allen's influence by Val Lewton is plainly evident having
learnt his trade with Lewton's B-picture unit at RKO. The similar style is also apparent
in his next Paramount feature, The Unseen (1945). |

Alonzo "The Armless Wonder", (Chaney), conceals
his arms in a tightly laced straitjacket to pose as an armless knife thrower in a Spanish
circus, a deformity that also fools the police who are looking for him, identified by
having two thumbs on one hand. Eventually Alonzo falls deeply in love with a
trapeze-artist named Nanon, (Crawford), who suffers from a phobia of men's arms around
her. Alonzo is told by his hunchback assistant, (George), that he will lose her love and
his identity will be revealed unless he does something about it. With this in mind, Alonzo
has his arms amputated to be with her, only to find that she has overcome her fears and
fallen in love with the circus strongman, Malabar, (Kerry). Filled with pain and revenge,
Alonzo plots a scheme to have Malabar's arms torn from his body during his performance.
Browning and Chaney's most lurid and gruesome collaboration for which Chaney underwent
extreme pain by wearing a special and uncomfortable harness that ultimately led to chronic
spine problems for the star.
The dark study of sexual phobia in an absurd plot is directed with such an emotional
intensity that it is lifted to one of the best macabre horror films ever made.

After a World War II an airman flies over an uncharted island and photographs a live
dinosaur, causing Ted Osborne, (Reed), to organise a photographic expedition to the remote
island in the South Pacific financed by his wealthy fiancee Carole Lane, (Grey). The ship
they hire is captained by a sadist named Tarnowski, (MacLane), who recommends taking along
John Fairbanks, (Denning), the only man to survive after his crew crash-landed on the
island and were eaten by the prehistoric creatures.
A cheap variation on the Lost World with an interesting variety
of creatures including rubber suited actors as dinosaurs and a giant red haired ape.

eventually reveals that the caretaker, (von Seyffertitz), stole the bonds before the
caretaker's ape that has been trained to kill rebels and slaughters its master.
A predictable mystery melodrama.
