Struggling student Balduin, (Wegener), meets Dr.
Scapinelli, (Gottowt), who offers him 100 thousand gold pieces in return for his
reflection. Now extremely wealthy, Balduin courts an aristocratic lady, (Berger), and is
challenged to a duel by the lady's fiance Baron Waldis, (Korner). Although promising not
to harm the Baron, Balduin is purposely delayed for the meeting at the appointed spot by
Scapinelli, who disguised as Balduin kills the Baron and the student is disgraced for not
honouring his word. Eventually Balduin shoots his reflection, but he falls to the ground,
dead. Scapinelli, who reveals himself to be the Devil, appears to claim his soul.
A variation of the Faust theme originally tinted brown, green and blue, filmed at
Belvedere Castle, Alchemist Street in Prague and at Furstenberg and Lobkowitz palaces.
The film was hailed as the first artistically important German production, and established
a wider market for Germany's motion pictures.
For religious reasons, the Jewish community refused to allow filming to take place in the
old cemetery. Instead, large medieval tombstones were erected in a forest nearby.
Paul Wegener, who worked in close collaboration with the Danish director D. Stellan Rye,
quickly realised the potential film possessed, and continued to develop an interest for
the "doppelganger" theme.
D. Stellan Rye died the following year in a French hospital in Flanders after injuries
sustained during the fighting at Ypres. |

apeman locked in a dungeon and the scientist has a Hindu servant who goes about scaring
people.
Most of the film is devoted to the comic antics of a loveable drunk, (Ortin), who pals
around with one of the doctors investigating the scientist's mysterious experiments. |

The bizarre climax has the scientist trying to ravish the
heroine when he suddenly becomes old. The apeman escapes and throws the scientist to his
death out of the window.
An obscure Mexican comedy that reworks Chaney's A Blind Bargain
and elements of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "The Picture of Dorian
Gray".
Emilio Fernandez later became a director and appeared as a villain in a number of Sam

A fake spiritualist, (Dinehart), betrays his associate Ruth Rogen, (Osborne), to the
police and being a three times murderess, she is sent to the electric chair. Claiming to
have contacted wealthy heiress Roma Courtney's, (Lombard), recently departed brother, the
spiritualist sets about his fraudalent intentions. However, when Courtney's doctor
experiments with Rogen's body to prove his theories of the transmigration of souls, the
vengeful spirit of Rogen possesses Roma's body and kills the evil spiritualist. Her
vengeance now satisfied, Roma comes to from the trance and returns to normal.
The Halperin brothers' second feature for Paramount following their successful White Zombie (1932), is an average ghost story with some style in the
opening scenes.
Overall this is a creaky melodrama that shows none of the Halperin flair of WHITE ZOMBIE.

Svengali, (Barrymore), an impoverished opportunist teaching m usic in 1890's Paris,
but he is also an evil hypnotist who mesmerizes a woman named Trilby O'Farrell, (Marsh),
to acheive fame with her singing in the hope that she will love him. To this end Svengali
tries to control her, but although he can control her voice, he cannot control her heart.
The first sound adaptation of du Maurier's popular novel is turned into a Victorian
melodrama with some sinister overtones and effectively bizarre sets by Polish art director
Anton Grot that work superbly in tandem with Barney McGill's lighting.
Unfortunately the film fails to captivate once Barrymore is off the screen, a role he
reprised in The Mad Genius released the same year.
The close up shots of Svengali's eyes were influenced by Dracula.
Photography and Art received Academy Award nominations.

When Dr. Maillard's friend decides to visit him at the asylum he governs he is shocked to
discover that the doctor and the staff are the inmates' prisoners w ho are threatening to
cure Dr. Maillard of insanity. "First cut out the eye, then slit the throat with a
sharp knife" suggests one of the lunatics, but a gust of wind sends them cowering
while the staff and Maillard escape and regain control of the madmen.
Features an unforgettable image of blood oozing from under a closed door, a vision of
subdued, primal terror, which was used again by Tourneur's son Jacques in RKO's The Leopard Man (1943).
Andre de Lorde was one of the Theatre de Grand Guignol's regular writers. |
