underworld!"

hired by the San Francisco "Dragon Lady" to keep the tourists out of Chinatown
and therefore hurt their businesses. Poten uses a hypnotism machine, bombs and poisoned
darts to kill off any intruders to the area.
This serial, the first of many by independent producer Katzman, is uninspired and gives no
explanation as to why the scientist so despises the Chinese in the first place.

PHANTOM kills off the scientist, but in the serial version he survives to presumably be

"Young and beautiful for 5000 years - and wicked
every one of them!"
After discovering an ancient parchment an expedition travels to the Arctic and finds a
lost civilisation tyrannically ruled by a five hundred year old white woman, (Gahagen),
who is waiting patiently for the reincarnation of her long lost love to return and finds
him in one of the expedition's members.
The first sound version of the famous tale set this time in the snowy wastes, but the
stilted dialogue and wooden acting detracts from the lavish studio sets.

fortune, tries to convince her that she is a werewolf. Phyllis' fiancee, Barry Lanfield,
(Porter), investigates the sightings of a white-veiled figure in the park at night.
In spite of the fine camerawork and atmospheric lighting effects, the plot is poorly
developed with an unbelievable solution, and more importantly, no werewolves.
A scene set in the 19th. century explaining how the Allenbys were originally cursed was
cut from the final print.

triangle develops between Cock Robin, Salome and a fiendish magician known as The Greek,
(Barrymore), who attempts to substitute the papier mache axe used in the play with a real

Dracula, (Chaney), arrives in contemporary Louisiana as
Count Alucard where he kills the owner of "Dark Oaks" plantation Colonel
Caldwell, (Irving), and vampirises his daughter Katherine, (Allbritton), who has a morbid
fascination for the occult. Dr. Harry Brewster, (Craven), warns Katherine's sister Claire,
(Ankers), of Count Alucard's true identity, and implores her to consult occult Professor
Lazslo, (Bromberg). Eventually Alucard convinces Katherine to marry him, but when her
fiancee, Frank Stanley, (Paige), finds out he tries to shoot Dracula, but the bullets pass
through him and he kills Katherine instead. She is brought back to life by Dracula as a
vampire and then urges Frank, who has been detained by the police for murder, to destroy
the Count, so that she and Frank can share immortality. He sets alight to Dracula's coffin
and watches the fiend disintergrate in the morning sun. Reluctantly he also sets
Katherine's coffin ablaze with her undead body in it.
A fair addition to the Universal horror cycle which has amongst its high points some great
opening title shots.
The transformations between man and bat are effectively achieved with animated sequences
although Chaney seems unsuitable as the Count, but by this time Lugosi wasn't even
considered for the role by the studio.

"The Menace of Basil Rathbone! The Fright of Boris Karloff! The Horror of Bela
Lugosi! The Hate of Lionel Atwill!"
"The black shadows of the past bred this half-man, half-demon!"
Baron Wolf Von Frankenstein, (Rathbone), arrives from America twenty five years after his
father's death to occupy the ancestral estate only to discover that their presence is
unwelcome by the local villagers and by Inspector Krogh, (Atwill), who lost his arm to the
Frankenstein monster years before. Mishapen Ygor, (Lugosi), once hanged for bodystealing,
yet survived the ordeal, has kept the body of the monster, (Karloff), waiting for the day
when someone could reanimate it. Ygor finally persuades the Baron to do so and then uses
the creature to enact revenge on the town elders who tried to hang him. Wolf tries to kill
the monster, and eventually kicks him into a sulpher pit after the creature kidnaps his
son, (Dunagen), and goes beserk when Ygor is shot.
The last of Universal's classic trio of Frankenstein films in which there is little to see
of the monster, but the diverting characters and the vast, impractical sets remain
impressive.
Originally planned to be filmed in Technicolor, but the idea was abandoned after test
shots of Karloff's makeup failed to impress studio executives. Scenes with Dwight Frye disappeared when the
colour footage was abandoned.
This was the last time Karloff would appear as the monster until 1962 in a Halloween
special of the television show "Route 66" titled "Lizard's Leg &
Owlet's Wing" at the age of 75.
Lugosi's character Ygor was developed further by director Rowland V. Lee who was outraged
that the studio planned to cut Lugosi's salary by shooting all his scenes within one week.
Lee ensured that Lugosi was used as much as possible for the whole duration of the
production.
The role of the baron was initially offered to Peter Lorre who turned it down.
During shooting Willis Cooper was encouraged to write a script titled "After
Frankenstein", but the project was a bandoned before production could begin.
The monster made a brief appearence in the bizarre 1941 comedy HELLZAPOPPIN before the
next Frankenstien sequel.
The film ended the self-imposed Hollywood ban on horror films.
Sequel: The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942). SON OF INGAGI (1940/Richard C. Kahn

Ed: Dan Milner. From a story by Spencer Williams Jnr.
Cast: Zack Williams, Laura Bowman, Alfred Grant, Spencer Williams Jnr., Daisy
Bufford, Arthur Ray; The Four Toppers.
"Terror reigns when the giant of the jungles breaks loose!"
An insane female scientist conducts experiments in her celler laboratory where she keeps a
hairy love-starved ape man known as Ingeena, (Williams Jnr.), locked in a cage. The beast
escapes and kidnaps a young bride, but finally kills himself by drinking poison.
A bizarre and interesting curiosity with an all-black cast and a sequel in name only to
1930's Ingagi.

"New Adventure! New Thrills! New Romance!"
Due to the destruction of New York City by Kong, Carl Denham, (Armstrong), is forced to
flee the United States and his creditors by setting sail on board the ship SS.Venture with
his friend Captain Englehorn, (Reicher). At the Malayan port of Dakang they learn of a
fabulous treasure on Skull Island from Nils Helstrom, (Marston), the man who originally
sold the map of the island to Englehorn. However, the crew mutiny and set Denham,
Englehorn and a girl named Hilda Peterson, (Mack), in a lifeboat who have no choice, but
to make their way to the mysterious island where they encounter a twelve foot tall
white-haired ape who they save from quicksand . In return the creature protects them from
a giant prehistoric bear and a brontosaurus. Denham and his companions recover a precious
jewel from a giant statue, but an earthquake ensues and the island begins to sink. The
young ape holds his new friends above the rising water at the cost of his own life until
Englehorn in the lifeboat can reach them.
A quickly made sequel to King Kong that does not achieve the
grandeur or power of the original epic.
The film was originally announced as JAMBOREE to keep curious Kong fans away from the set
and promoted as a comedy, but although highly entertaining it remains only a rousing
jungle adventure.
Willis O'Brien was reported to have been unhappy with the comic elements of the story and
refused to discuss the film in later years.
