Cast: Hurd Hatfield,
Helmut Berger, Donna Reed, George Sanders, Lydia Bilbrook,
Angela Lansbury, Miles Mander, Peter Lawford, Morton Lowry, Lowell Gilmore, Douglas
Walton, Richard Fraser, Bernard Gorcey, Skelton Knaggs, Billy Bevan, John
George. Narrated: Cedric Hardwicke, Moyna McGill. "If only the picture could change and I could be always what I am now. For that I would give anything. Yes, there's nothing in the whole world I wouldn't give. I'd give my soul for that." - Dorian Gray (Hatfield). In Victorian London likeable Dorian Gray, (Hatfield), is actually much older than he looks, but he remains young while his hidden portrait that he comes to despise, ages and reflects the ravages of Dorian's descent into a debauched lifestyle. A hauntingly memorable MGM. spectacular aided by Sanders portrayal of Dorian's friend that brings the whole narrative into focus and Lansbury's convincing characterisation as a nightclub singer performing the catchy tune "Little Yellow Bird". Reportedly costing $2 million which was primarily used for the effective early Technicolor shots of the sinister portrait. Harry Stradling received an Academy Award while Lansbury received an Academy Award nomination. Watch for Lansbury's real life mother Moyna McGill as a Duchess. PIERRETTE'S DREAM (1908/Pathe)

Moore Marriott, Gus McNaughton, O.B. Clarence, John Turnbull, Clarence Wright, Ernest Thesiger, Helen Goss, Edie
Martin, Muriel George, Aubrey Mallalieu, Henry Longhurst. In Edwardian England elderly Mr. and Mrs. Smedhurst, (Mason & Mullen), and their young companian, Annette, (Lockwood), retire to Bellingham house, a quiet retreat in the country that has remained empty for forty years and is rumoured to be haunted. Annette becomes possessed by the restless spirit of a murdered girl and Doctor Marsham, (Thesiger), is called when she suffers a particularly deep trance. The doctor, who also treated the murdered girl forty years earlier, cures the companion, but then the elderly couple discover that the doctor died hours before ever reaching their house. An underplayed ghost tale set in fussy period atmosphere with moments of creepiness and an excellent cast. THE PLAGUE IN FLORENCE (1919) see Pest in Florenz THE PLOT (1914/Vitagraph) 2 reels. BW.
