sells them in a desperate attempt to obtain food for her. When a publisher finally
approves the poems, Poe returns home with some food, but his wife is already dead and a
raven is in the room.
The film closes with a verse from the poem.

When Stapleton, (Kohne), is captured for his crimes in DER HUND VON BASKERVILLE he escapes
to a specially constructed submersible house in the centre of a lake. Holmes, (Neuss),
trapped inside Baskerville castle calls for help with his pocket wireless outfit. Later
while Holmes is struggling to free Lord Baskerville, (Fichtner), and Lady Baskerville from
the submerged house, Stapleton breaks the windows allowing the water to flood in. Holmes
discovers a way to raise the house in the nick of time and blows it up trapping Stapleton
to a watery doom.
A wonderful mixture of science fiction and derring-do with nothing in common to Conan
Doyle's stories. The title translates as "The Isolated House".
Released as the second part of DER HUND VON BASKERVILLE (1914).

into the jungle swampland on foot where he encounters the ghosts of his victims.
Considered to be one of Paul Robeson's finest screen performances.
Dudley Digges is the only white member of the cast.

A seated lady, (d'Alcy), is draped in a sheet and replaced by a skeleton when the cover is
removed.
Inspired by illusionist Buatier de Kolta, Melies stopped the camera, replaced the actress
with a skeleton and started the camera again. Melies had accidentally discovered the trick
of substitution while filming "The Place de L'Opera" when the film temporarily
jammed inside the camera. When he developed the print an omnibus seemingly changed into a
hearse.
Jehanne d'Alcy became Melies' second wife in 1925.
THE VANISHING LADY is the second earliest Melies film known to be still in existence.
